A driver has been labelled a ‘menace on the roads’ by a district court judge and will not be allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle until 2022.
Robert Anthony Broms, 32, was already disqualified from driving when he chose to drive on February 28 this year.
Broms appeared in the Nelson District court on Monday charged with driving while disqualified, driving with breath alcohol over 400mcg and breaching conditions of intensive supervision.
The police Summary of Facts told how shortly after 7.30pm on February 28, he was seen by police driving on Washington Rd, Nelson.
He was stopped on Britannia Heights where he gave a breath test reading of 784mcg per litre of breath. The legal limit is 250.
In explanation to police he said he was simply trying to help a friend. He pleaded guilty to all charges.
Judge Richard Russell explained the two alcohol limits; 250mcg and 400mcg per litre of breath, and said Broms was “well over” both.
“The concern is you have been driving repeatedly when you shouldn’t be, and what makes it worse is you’ve been drinking.
“You’re a menace on the roads quite frankly.”
Judge Russell convicted Broms on all charges and ordered a previous community service sentence of 194 hours be cancelled and replaced with one of 275 hours.
He also disqualified Broms from driving for another 12 months which means he will not be allowed behind the wheel until January 2022.
He was ordered to come up if called upon in the next six months for breaching intensive supervision.
