More than 150 first-time and recreational snorkelers were guided through the waters of Cable Bay on Saturday as part of Sea Week 2021.
Port Nelson Guided Snorkel Day was hosted by Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) with support from Port Nelson, DOC, Cable Bay Kayaks, Guardians of the Sea and Tasman Bay Guardians.
The purpose of the event was to increase community connection with guardianship of the local marine environment and marine reserves.
Horoirangi Marine Reserve was established in 2006 and covers an area of 904 hectares from Cable Bay to Glenduan.
DOC marine reserve ranger for Horoirangi, Stew Robertson, says events such as the Cable Bay Snorkel Day play an essential part in protecting and enhancing
marine reserves.
