Little Women The Broadway Musical, Produced by Nelson Youth Theatre Company at the Theatre Royal 7pm daily to the 1st May. Review by K O’Connor.
This adaptation of the well known book by Louisa May Alcott is aptly suited to be performed in the Theatre Royal and the performances lived up to the grandeur of the surroundings.
I was privileged to view both teams performing this story of four sisters coming of age and all the trials and tribulations involved at the time. The story is a favourite of mine and I was not disappointed in the way it was brought to life on stage.
Both actors playing Jo (Emily Furniss/Lauren Loghry) put in strong performances and I was moved to tears by the loving sisterly looks and the gorgeous song that Jo and Beth (Joelle Noar/Olivia Murray) shared while flying a kite.
The sibling relationship between the four sisters was a credit to the performers whose squabbles, dramas and laughingly funny antics reminded me of my own children. The beautiful and heartfelt singing of Mamie (Kameta Whaharoa/Michaela Carruthers) was a credit to such young actresses who allowed the emotion of their songs to shine through whilst hitting every note.
I enjoyed a laugh at the wonderfully staunch Aunt March (Suzie Olive/Grace Gutschlag) who both hit the character spot on with haughty comments in all the right places. The change in Amy from a jealous younger sister to a woman in love was beautifully projected by Ella Danson. Laurie (Sam Clarke) showing just the right amount of flirty playfulness and earnestness as well as holding his own in the singing. Mr Brooks and Professor Bhaer also deserve a mention for their fabulous performances.
With only five more shows to go if you want some entertainment on these darker nights or like me, remember Little Women as a book from your youth make your way along to the Theatre Royal to see this fabulous performance.
