With a huge volume of debris still floating under the surface posing a hazard to the lightweight racing skiffs, a special crew of elite rowers was out on the water chipping in with Nelson Rowing Club’s efforts to clean up after the recent flooding.
The Coastal Quad was crewed by world champion Lucy Spoors, Olympic gold medalist Michael Brake, Bibi Colgan, Olympian Brook Robertson, and Sally Knight.
Nelson Rowing Club member Brook Robertson says he was eager to come back to his hometown and help out, bringing some of his Cambridge crewmates with him.
Brook is in the elite Rowing New Zealand squad, and is soon off to the Czech Republic with the Rowing NZ team for the world champs.
Soon after that he will be racing at both the World Coastal Champs long distance event, and at the World Coastal Beach Sprints.
The Coastal crew spent time helping the Clean up crew, in between practicing ocean rowing, with buoy turns and beach starts.
“It was so good to be home, rowing out of the Nelson Rowing Club again. It’s sad to see how damaging these floods and slips have been, but we’re glad to help, even a tiny bit, with the Haven clean up.”
