We were treated to a musical extravaganza of Show medleys from Miss Saigon, A Chorus Line, Jersey Boys, Spamalot, and more, at Nelson Musical Theatre’s latest offering, A Night on Broadway.
The strong, confident and sassy ensemble poured their hearts, souls and energy into two hours of old favourites, new experiences, smash hits and hidden gems. Accompanied by an incredibly talented 9-piece live band conducted by Chris Lukies, the powerful ensemble came out strong from the opening number with a showcase of dynamic harmonies and the energy never dimmed.
From experienced Nelson songstress Suzanne Borlase who served up a beautiful rendition of ‘Who am I anyway’, to Renata van der Wal who had an exceptional Nelson stage debut with her stunning, clear voice and sultry tones in ‘If my friends could see me now’, to the youngest performer, 9-year-old Sophie Tyler’s sweet delivery of ‘Castle on a cloud’, the cast were clearly having a good time together, and it brought an infectious joy to the evening.
There was a delightful playfulness between Daniel de Clercq and Saul Gibney who kicked it up a notch with some hilarious and lively dance moves in ‘What I did for love’.
The perfect pairing of Saul Gibney and Lynley Rutherford had the crowd in hysterics with their comedic delivery of ‘The song that goes like this’. The band didn’t miss out on the fun with the Stepping Out medley providing the perfect opportunity to showcase their talents – and who doesn’t love a bit of trombone!
