Celebrating some of the region's finest food, beverages and creations, the talented collaboration of Moutere Artisans will be opening their doors on Sunday October 23, and warmly welcoming the public to explore their unique village of Upper Moutere.
Labour Weekend marks the start of the summer season for the artisans and their open day event attracts hundreds of people from all over the region. It has been running for around 16 years and the addition of a second open day, celebrated in autumn of this year, was met with excitement and a fantastic turnout, with organisers confident in continuing the now bi-annual event. Noël Jelsma, co-owner of Neudorf Black and chairman of Moutere Artisans, says, “We were all blown away with the amazing support from locals and visitors alike. It was great to see so many people coming out to enjoy a relaxing and fun day out in our village. It was especially nice to be able to offer a slightly different experience with different crops in season, and the beautiful surroundings playing their part with autumn colours on the hills.”
The upcoming Labour Weekend open day will be the first in a few years to run free of Covid restrictions and Noël says it comes as a welcome relief. “It is so nice to not have the barrier of masks between people. Not just the physical barrier, but also the mental stress of do we/don’t we wear masks. It is heart-warming to see everyone’s smiles as they try new things and enjoy their day out. This makes things more relaxed for everyone involved.” Wanting everyone to feel as comfortable as possible, Noël assures that all will be welcome. “Of course, those folks who are still concerned or at higher risk are able to wear masks as they choose with no judgement or issues from anyone.”
Jewellery, sculptures, pottery and ceramics will be available on the day, a pint can be enjoyed at New Zealand's oldest pub or new season wines sampled from the plethora of award-winning Moutere Valley vineyards along with some of the country’s finest cheeses, mushrooms, olive oils, black garlic, and gourmet smallgoods. To help ease congestion in the village the Moutere Hills Community Centre (MHCC) will be serving as a hub of information on the day. “It’s a great first stop for people to pick up a map and flyer, use the facilities, and grab a coffee from the cart at the community centre before they visit the artisans.”
Making for a wonderful social day out, Noël suggests meeting up with friends at the MHCC and carpooling to each stop. “There is plenty of parking available at the community centre and Neudorf Black (92 Neudorf Road).”
