It’s no wonder Disney’s Frozen has been so popular for nearly a decade with its two Academy awards for best animated picture and best song 'Let it Go'.
These holidays, Nelson Youth Theatre brings to the Theatre Royal stage this much-loved story of a kingdom trapped in a never-ending winter and two sisters.
Fearless Anna, who teams up with isolated mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick, set out to find Anna's sister, frosty snow queen Elsa, in order to break her icy spell and hopefully restore their sisterly bond.
Along the way they meet trolls, snowmen and lots of magic.
The popularity of Frozen manifested in the huge interest from Nelson youth for being part of the show, and Richard Carruthers does a sterling job amassing such a large cast of over 100 and the many crew, helpers and supporters to bring this dazzling icy escapade to the stage for this family winner.
The audience encourages the heroines and boos the villain, and the impressive special effects add to the creation of the icy land and Elsa’s powers.
The costumes are impressive, and Michaela Carruthers as Elsa gives a beautiful rendition of 'Let it Go', augmented by nice harmonies from the chorus.
Poppy Hogan deserves special mention for the fun energy she brings as Big Oaken.
Choreography trumps special effects in this well-rehearsed chorus. Remember though chorus, that when you are on stage the audience is watching you, and the stand outs are those who bring constant energy to their character.
The show was extended due to ticket demand and runs until 8 October with both matinee and evening performances.
This is guaranteed fun family entertainment these school holidays, get your tickets quickly before they fly out of the door like a swirling flurry of snow.
