For the first time ever, Sailability members were able to compete in a local mainstream event.
Two of their sailors and their companions (coaches) took to the water in Nelson Yacht Club's annual Wakatu Regatta last weekend in specially designed Hansa 303 yachts.
The boats have special features such as a lead weighted centreboard that prevent them from capsizing and sails that furl, but with the weekend boasting the typical Nelson summer conditions of sun and a gentle sea breeze, the sailors didn't encounter problems that required their adaptations.
It's the first time the Sailability group has been included in a local mainstream event, with the regatta consisting of five races inside the harbour and a sixth race “Around the Island” (Haulashore) over the two days.
Racing was competitive and close with Hansa ORANGE of Cole Thelin and Daniel Levy (companion) narrowly beating Hansa RED.
The highlight of the Regatta for the group was sailing their yachts out past The Cut and the race around Haulashore, which was a first as their regular Sunday sailing is within the inner harbour.
The Nelson Sailability Trust is hopeful that with another Hansa yacht, even more of their group will have the opportunity to participate, which they say offers invaluable experience in building their skills and confidence.
The Trust wanted to give a special thanks to the Nelson Yacht Club, the Regatta organisers and the Race Officer for making the pathway to include a Hansa division and their group of sailors.
