A forestry fire that broke out in Riwaka Valley near Motueka on Tuesday afternoon is about 80 per cent contained according to local firefighters.
Four helicopters and ground crews Motueka, Tasman, Ngatimoti, Appleby, Upper Moutere and Nelson had been working through the evening to bring the fire under control.
Fire and Emergency district manager Grant Haywood said early on Tuesday evening that the fire was burning on steep terrain in an area of harvested forest.
Smoke was visible from Motueka but there is no threat to other property, he said.
Crews will stay overnight and the helicopters will be back in the morning along with specialist forestry crews.
FENZ are working with forestry partners to put the fire out.
