A stunning opening nunnery scene sets the standard of well-rehearsed harmonies and great costuming.
The heart-warming story, based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family, follows the journey of Maria, a restless postulant at Nonberg Abbey in Austria.
Maria is sent to become the new governess for stoic Naval Captain Georg von Trapp, a widower with seven children who seems to have lost any sense of joy.
Amelia Scowen shines in the role of Maria. Not missing a single note, her characterisation was beautiful, joyful and entertaining and contrasted well with the regimented Captain, portrayed by Joel Sangster. You couldn't help but be drawn into her journey.
Capt. Von Trapp's children were well cast and entertaining. From Friedrich (a confident Daniel Hall) to little Georgia Collins as cute Gretl. They have fantastic harmonies that they’ve obviously worked hard on. All the show classics delivered well, with simple effective choreography.
Leading the children as eldest sister Liesl is a poised Amelia Hall, whose teenage romance with telegram boy Rolf (Moana Williams) provides a fun show highlight with their duet ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’ and choreographed dance. It was performed with sweet adolescent flirtation.
The ensemble cast fills the supporting roles well - though all could remember to face the audience, and Jordy Channings as Baroness Shrader, could deliver stronger to contrast against Maria.
A stand-out performance worth of a special mention was Hannah Astridge as Mother Abbess. With her amazing vocals that had an excellent blend of head and chest voice, she was a warm and believable mother figure.
The audience was truly captivated throughout, from the opening scene right to the end.
Overall, a great show that will get even better. Don't miss seeing it!
