Broadgreen Intermediate is warming up for a fundraiser to clinch a heavyweight of funds for a planned hauora [health and well-being] programme to support its more than 500 students.
Teacher and fundraiser organiser, Eleanor Aleksich, says the fundraiser will be a screening of the film Stylebender, which chronicles New Zealand UFC star Israel Adesanya and his journey through his emotional scars from bullying, immigration and racism.
She says the fundraiser, which will show at Suter Theatre on 4 December from 6pm, will also feature a Q&A session with cast member, Motueka resident and Adesanya’s ‘possibilities manager’, Janet Redmond.
“She’s agreed to help support [the hauora] programme with teaching skills and some of the tools that she uses in her career as a psychotherapist, as a counsellor, as a possibilities manager and all the expertise that she carries,” Eleanor says.
“We’ve decided to fundraise so that we could give her some money instead of her doing it for free because we think that there’s a lot of value in her work.
“What kids bring to school is a plethora of issues and it’s affecting the school, the school work and social interactions, so having her come in and teach skills and tools to deal with the emotions, to deal with what’s going on at school and at home, that’s awesome.”
Eleanor says 100 tickets for the event are up for grabs with proceeds going towards the programme. Tickets can be purchased here.
