It was all systems go as Nelson Harness Racing Club’s annual meet got underway on Friday.
With two days of action, and the weather set for another scorcher for tomorrow’s races, it was Stonewall Stud and Stables and Driver Tim Williams with Alta Meteor who took out the feature race on day one in the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup.
The Auckland-based stable also picked up another winner with Rock Band, driven by Jonny Cox, who also picked up a race win for local Richmond Park trainer Murray Pash with Mary Lou at big odds.
Kentuckiana Lodge and Carter Dalgety were on fire with a triplet of wins, with Wallflower, Woodlea Jewel and All You Need Is Me coming in over the line in first.
Diamond Racing Stables, based out of Canterbury and Auckland, picked up a double with Sunny’s Sister and Bryce’s Meddle, while junior driver Sam Thornley came home in for a big victory in race 10 with horse, Chris Kyle, trained by Bruce Negus.
Sunday’s action kicks off from midday, with 11 races and over $150,000 in prize money up for grabs. Fashion on the Field also returns for the final day of racing, with all the glitz and glamour of a track day.
