Tasman District Council has urged Wakefield and Brightwater residents to immediately stop using water unless "absolutely essential".
It says issues at the Wakefield water supply has led to a significantly increased demand placed on the Brightwater supply.
"Our pumps are working at over capacity and are severely compromised," council says.
"We are requesting residents restrict any water use to essential use only."
