Roadworks on Main Rd Stoke have caused gridlock across the roading network just hours after it began.
Main Rd Stoke is being resealed from Wednesday with works expected to finish on Tuesday, 12 March.
Works will affect the road between 7am and 6pm but the road will be fully open on Saturday and Sunday.
Nelson City Council said the road would remain open at all times for Northbound traffic heading towards Stoke but advised that delays were expected.
Starting Wednesday 6 March, contractors will be resealing Main Road Stoke. This will require traffic management to be in place. The road will reopen in full for Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 March. Work is expected to finish on Tuesday 12 March.
Southbound traffic heading towards Richmond is being diverted along Saxton Road West and SH6 Whakatū Drive. Those visiting the industrial estate on Elms St will need to use the Whakatū diversion and the northbound lane to turn left into Elms Street.
