A 'significant' weather event is unfolding onto the country this week with heavy rain and wind expected to hit Nelson Tasman from Thursday.
Metservice labelled the event 'significant' earlier this week, with rain beginning further south on Tuesday.
A heavy rain warning has been issued for Tasman northwest of Nelson including Golden Bay from 6am Thursday.
Between 150 to 250mm of rain is expected through a 21 hour period till 3am Friday.
A Heavy Rain Warning is also in place for the Bryant Range, spanning the Nelson Tasman region with between 100 and 150mm expected between 9am Thursday and 6am Friday.
Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.
The entire Top of the South is also subject to a Strong Wind Watch from noon on Thursday through to early Friday morning with severe gale force northerly winds possible in exposed places.
