Rocks Rd is anticipated to close for a period overnight due to forecasted weather and tidal conditions for Nelson.
The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has advised light vehicles travelling on the State Highway 6 section between 10pm on Thursday and 2am on Friday morning to use detours, and for heavy vehicles to use Waimea Rd.
It also encourages all drivers to check road and weather conditions before they travel.
Metservice has issued an Orange Heavy Rain Warning for Tasman northwest of Motueka until 3am on Friday morning with up to 250mm of rain expected with up to 30mm an hour peak rates from Thursday afternoon.
It says heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.
An Orange Heavy Rain Warning is also in place for the Bryant Range, spanning the Nelson Tasman region with between 100 and 150mm expected between 9am Thursday and 6am Friday.
The entire Top of the South is also subject to a Strong Wind Watch from noon on Thursday through to early Friday morning with severe gale force northerly winds possible in exposed places.
