A Richmond ATM dished out more than its share of cash when it reportedly spat out $50 notes instead of $20 for a brief time last month.
The ATM at BNZ on Queen St, was loaded with the wrong “cassette” which meant it distributed $50 notes instead of $20, Nelson App understands.
A BNZ spokesperson confirmed the incident, but not the finer details.
“We are aware of an incident at our Richmond branch in mid-January where a third-party supplier incorrectly loaded an ATM. The issue was addressed as soon as it came to our attention.”
The spokesperson wouldn’t comment on whether they would be seeking to recover the lost money, nor would they confirm the dollar value of the effect to the bank or how long the ATM was giving out the wrong notes.
“While any technical issue is regrettable, incidents of this nature are extremely rare,” the spokesperson says.
“We have robust processes in place with our suppliers and continue to review and strengthen these to prevent similar incidents.”
