It’s a little early for April Fool’s, but it seems someone has decided that Motueka’s residents need a little less work and a little more play.
It appears that the sign at the Raumanuka Scenic Reserve has been painstakingly altered from Motueka Sandspit to… well, Sandpit.
The area, also known locally as the Kumaras, is indeed a beloved recreation area for locals, but usually they do so by walking their dogs or building driftwood huts, rather than pulling out their Tonka trucks.
A Department of Conservation representative says that it looks like someone decided to have a bit of fun over the weekend, and that the trickster “did a pretty good job with the font and colour”.
DOC was alerted on Monday, and local rangers were planning to remove the sign as soon as possible.
