The Motueka High School house sports parade was a celebration of colour, culture and camaraderie, with the four houses embracing the good-natured battle for the coveted top spot earlier this month.
Wai house channelled Rio with a swirling blue carnival, allowing the section’s contingent of confident dancers to lead the way down the field. The judges were presented with their customary bribery cake – a two-tiered beauty from the blue team.
Angi embraced their yellow theme with a beach vibe, hoping to win the judge’s favour with a side of pina coladas to accompany their coastal cake.
Ahi took red to the next level with a Red Bull race, delivering their cake by crimson moped. Nuku went military to match their green hue, starting with a crisp sound-off and finishing with a glorious water fight.
Their cake was decorated with a slightly unappetising camouflage colour scheme, perhaps best blending into the background alongside their energetic and entertaining performance.
School sports coordinator Sam Trevurza called it an “absolutely fantastic day, filled with incredible house spirit”.
She says that Wai house was judged the parade champions, for the first time in a remarkable 17 years.
They shone for their “outstanding organisation, a clear theme, and an engaging, captivating performance”, she reports.
The parade is just part of proceedings, however, with a packed day of sporting events giving the teams plenty more opportunities to rack up some points for their house.
“The students were thrilled with a few exciting changes made to the day’s events, especially the Just Dance session, which saw 100% participation in nearly every single group!”
Sam says that with a strong performance in the afternoon swimming pool activities, Angi pulled ahead of Wai to take top standing overall for the day’s events. Wai came in second, Nuku third, and Ahi fourth.
