The Bard had a good airing last week, with 32 Motueka High School drama students performing a range of scenes at the school’s annual Shakespeare celebration.
Following on from this mid-week performance was the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand’s regional Shakespeare festival at Nayland College on Sunday. MHS performed against five other schools and the students were proud to walk away with some accolades.
The performers won “Best History Scene” with a five-minute snippet from Richard III. Student Cade Hassell both directed and performed in the scene, alongside Nate Christoffersen and Mason Brenchley. Niwha Hughes was awarded the prize for “Most Promising Junior Actor” for his interpretation of Hamlet in a 15-minute condensed play by British playwright Tom Stoppard.
Teacher in charge of drama, Emily Shepherd, says there were some “outstanding performances in both shows”.
“It was a joy to see students from Year 9 to 13 strut their stuff on the stage. Nga mihi mahana MHS actors – you definitely owned the stage!”
