Some “game-changing” community donations over the past month have meant food on the table for more struggling Motueka households.
New World’s Family 2 Family campaign struck a chord with customers, who purchased 317 prefilled “food parcel” bags at a cost of $20 each. Another 45 bags were filled by customers and placed in the collection trolley. The donations were shared between Motueka Community House and Food Share Motueka.
The supermarket also provided a $2000 New World gift card to each organisation to support their work. New World Motueka owners Nicola and Simon Hollyer say they would like to acknowledge the generosity of their customers who supported the Family 2 Family campaign, as well as those who continue to make donations on a weekly basis.
“We know every contribution is gratefully received by Community House and Food Share Motueka,” Nicola says.
Community House manager Jane Henderson says they were “so stoked to the recipients of this support.”
“The Family 2 Family initiative is a game changer for the provision of emergency kai to families who struggle to make ends meet,” she explains.
“Without this we could be turning people away on a daily basis.
“Sometimes we are literally providing the only food for the table that night, without judgement. New World are such generous supporters of Community House which in turn helps us to support others.”
Although the food bag campaign is finished, the supermarket’s food donation trolley is a permanent fixture near the check-out.
