Continuing with the tradition of bringing high quality, musical performances to Motueka, the Motueka Music Group, in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand, is proud to present Kiwi-Malaysian pianist John Chen as he tours New Zealand with an all-French programme.
The programme of this 2025 New Zealand tour features Poulenc’s Three Novelettes, Duparc’s Four Melodies, Franck’s Prelude Chorale and Fugue, Fauré’s Theme and Variations op. 73, and Saint-Saëns’6 Etudes Op. 111. This is a celebration of the beautiful simplicity and melodic romanticism that a solo piano can achieve.
Having become the youngest-ever winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2004, at the age of 18, Chen has performed with most of the major symphony orchestras in Australia and New Zealand. He studied with Rae de Lisle at the University of Auckland, where he obtained his Master of Music, and further attained an Artist Diploma at Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles under John Perry. Harbouring a passion for 20th century French music, he has made recordings of works by Henri Dutilleux, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel for Naxos and ABC Classics.
The Chanel Arts Centre is always warm and inviting on cold winter nights, so wrap up and come out to treat yourselves to a magnificent evening of outstanding piano music.
