Shrek the Musical Jr by Nelson Youth Theatre Company, Tuesday 1 July 2025 at the Theatre Royal. Reviewed by Nicole Hogan.
Shrek is an all-time favourite musical for our family, and today’s performance did not disappoint.
As expected, the story follows Shrek, the big, bad (and very green) ogre, on his quest to reclaim his beloved swamp from a chaotic band of fairy-tale characters banished by the villainous Lord Farquaad. Along the way, Shrek discovers the value of friendship, love, and accepting others—and himself—for who they truly are.
With a cast of over 100, this was a well-orchestrated, high-energy production. The ensemble gave it their all, performing with infectious joy and enthusiasm throughout the entire 70-minute runtime.
Malachai Ng delivered a stellar performance as Shrek, maintaining a convincing Scottish accent while singing and speaking—a tough feat, pulled off with charm. Donkey, played by Niamh Walsh, was another standout, bursting with energy and sass. Slightly clearer diction would help some of the fast-paced jokes land even better.
Makayla White (Fiona), Baxter Markham (Lord Farquaad), Katarina Salcin-Watts (Dragon), Jasmine Morrison (Pinocchio), and Noi Self (Gingy) all shone in their roles, keeping the audience laughing and thoroughly engaged.
Special mention must go to the makeup department—your work was phenomenal. From ogres to gingerbread men, each character looked incredible. You’ll no doubt be seeing green for weeks!
Shrek The Musical Jr is a thoroughly enjoyable show for all ages—fun, heartwarming, high energy where as an audience you cant help but smile the whole way through.
