Nelson’s main link remains closed in both directions into Sunday.
The closure of Rocks Rd between Russell St and Bisley Ave, stays put for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
Waimea Rd and Whakatu Dr are the recommended detour for all traffic, including heavy vehicles.
Waka Kotahi NZTA says the State Highway 6 section, which first closed on Friday morning due to a slip, says a specialist abseiling team is on-site removing dangerous material from the clifftop, which is precarious, and falling onto the road below.
“This work is slow and laborious but needs to be completed to prevent material falling onto motorists, cyclists and pedestrians below,” it says.
“The road needs to remain closed until it is safe to reopen.”
Waka Kotahi says people wanting to access restaurants on Wakefield Quay can enter via Haven Rd.
An update on the road condition is expected today.
