One of the best things about having such a unique and loved venue like the Motueka Chanel Arts Centre is that many of NZs best artists just want to come back and play another concert.
NZTrio is no exception and this year they bring a varied programme for violin, piano, and cello that we believe will have something for everyone. From their own description, the programme contains Turina’s Circulo which depicts a single day through dawn, midday and dusk. In Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No.1 in C minor, the piece swings from moody quiet moments to explosive drama with the piano pulling the strings.
Chen Yi’s Tibetan Tunes creates a fusion of traditional Tibetan melodies referencing Buddhist god Du Mu, and we will hear the premiere of Angelus, a new commission by one of Aotearoa’s most acclaimed composers, John Psathas.
Finally, Franck’s youthful Piano Trio No. 1 in F sharp minor. Of interest to NZTrio followers, familiar with Amalia Hall and Sooni Kim as foundation members of the trio, this time they have a guest performer. The cellist is none other than Amalia’s brother Callum Hall which will add an interesting dimension to the concert. He holds a Doctorate from Michigan State University and a Masters degree from Waikato University, and his practice bridges the worlds of classical and contemporary.
