You may have noticed a new byline and photo credit appearing in the Nelson Weekly, so we thought it was time to introduce our new intern Leo Jury.
Leo joins the Top South Media team through the Gateway Programme -a pathway that gives college senior learners opportunities to access workplace learning that is integrated with school-based learning.
Leo, a Year 13 at Nayland College, has a strong interest in media, design, and photography.
“I was in Australia for the holidays about a year ago, and I took so many photos of landscapes and buildings and it was just a lot of fun.
“I really found a passion for taking photos and my nan said they were really good. She’s always pushing to do what you love for a career. And so when it came to actually selecting something for the Gateways course, the first thing that came to mind was photography.”
Nelson Weekly welcomed Leo to the team, and under the guidance of our team of journalists, has had his photographs published.
Leo has also had the joy of seeing his first article in print – a piece written about the Nelson Youth Theatre’s school holidays shows.
“It’s been a lot of fun to come and see how it works,” Leo shares. “It makes me appreciate news a lot more. A lot goes into every little detail, even just thinking of headlines was a bit of a struggle.”
When Leo’s first article was published, it was a proud moment for his parents, he says.
Leo also has a passion for film-making, winning an award for cinematography last year. While he wants to seize opportunities as they present themselves, Leo is loosely planning to study at NMIT next year, but not before getting some more articles printed in the Nelson Weekly.
