The Murchison Garden Club is springing into the season with colour, creativity, and community spirit as they prepare for their 76th Annual Spring Flower Show - and this year there’s a fresh twist.
Alongside the ever-popular floral displays, locals are invited to take part in a fun new feature: Spring-decorated garden gumboots.
Whether it’s a splash of paint, a bunch of blooms, or a full-blown spring scene in a boot — the club says it’s “the perfect purpose for those old tatty gumboots” sitting around at home. Everyone is encouraged to join in— from seasoned gardeners to preschoolers.
This year’s Floral Art Competition, themed ‘You Are My Sunshine’, will showcase artwork from Murchison Area School children alongside delightful creations from children at Murchison Kindergarten and Playcentre.
Funds raised will stay in Murchison, supporting local causes, with a current focus on turning the unused space between Hodgson’s shop and the Hampden Hotel into a welcoming area with new tables, seats, and raised gardens - all in time for next year’s 150th jubilee.
Entries can be dropped off either the day before or the morning of the show, so there’s plenty of time to pull out those old boots, dig out the glitter, paint or glue, and help make this year’s show a blooming good time.
Murchison Garden Club’s Spring Flower Show and Decorated Garden Gumboots is on 17 September at the Rec Centre on Hampden St. For queries contact Carolyn Gattsche on 027 440 4130.
