It’s certainly been good weather for ducks, but not such a great climate for Riwaka School’s duck race fundraiser, which was set to run last weekend.
Principal Adele Lidgard says the school is still triaging the differing needs in the community, and given the circumstances, the timing did not feel right to hold the event.
The school’s neighbourhood stretches to Mārahau, Kaiteriteri, Brooklyn and the Tākaka Hill, and “every day we’re still finding out what people need”.
The event has not been cancelled outright, however – a reimagined duck race will be held later in Term Four, with “all sort of ideas out there” as to what that might look like.
She can confirm that it will be a community-focused event, with all previous duck purchases honoured and the same “really cool prizes” up for grabs, just in time for Christmas.
