A pilot initiative launched earlier this year by Menzshed Waimea is already making an impact, with some refugees and migrants finding jobs just months after joining the programme.
The Trades - Skills and English Language Enhancement programme, launched in February, has helped participants overcome language barriers, build confidence, and - most notably - secure real employment outcomes.
Initially a six-month course, the programme has become a flexible, mentor-led model where participants join anytime and learn at their own pace.
“Two participants have already found jobs since February - it’s amazing,” says Menzshed Waimea member and mentor Joel Norton.
“Many bring strong skills; they just need support with language and workplace culture.”
Sen Nhiang, a Vietnamese refugee who arrived just eight months ago, faced language barriers, cultural and community challenges, but found a fresh start through the programme.
He’s now employed at a Richmond-based glass and window company, supporting his family and contributing to his new community.
Asif Ali from Pakistan has been gaining hands-on experience in the metalwork shop. Though initially unfamiliar with many machines, he quickly learned and now operates them confidently, and is now preparing for his first job interview.
“His understanding of English has grown quite well in the time I have known him. With the correct guidance and understanding, l think he would make a valuable employee,” Menzshed Waimea team leader Bruce Dewe adds.
Although language remains the biggest barrier, retired teachers from the Menzshed are preparing to offer free one-on-one English lessons, providing another layer of support that will further improve participants’ chances of gaining local employment.
“It’s great to see things progressing,” says Joel. “People aren’t just gaining skills - they’re rebuilding their lives.”
The initiative is a result of strong community collaboration. It has received backing from the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, Nelson City and Tasman District Councils, the Rātā Foundation, and DIA Lottery Community Services. Community partners include Nelson Red Cross NZ ‘Pathways to Employment’, Victory Community Centre, Multicultural Nelson Tasman, English Language Partners, Toi Toi Medical, Nelson Family Medicine, and Delhi Supermarket.
