In June my husband, Graeme, and I attended the Primary Industries New Zealand Conference (PINZ) in Christchurch, thanks to our local Golden Bay branch of Federated Farmers. It was a privilege to be part of such a thought-provoking event, bringing together leaders and professionals from across the agri-sector to explore the current landscape and future of our primary industries.
One of the standout moments of the first day came from Michael Every, Rabobank Global Strategist, who delivered a compelling and eye-opening presentation on the global political environment. His insights into the way geo-political tensions, international alliances, and policy changes could influence global markets were both timely and sobering.
He painted a picture of how America and China are increasingly shaping the future of agri-business here in New Zealand and the choices and decisions we will need to make in order to continue trading. Further presentations from others reinforced this, with topics such as Understanding what the global trade environment means for New Zealand, Trade and Exports in a volatile world, and changing the narrative around how we farm.
The second day focused on the growing environmental challenges facing the agricultural sector. Speakers addressed topics such as energy sources, climate change, water usage and freshwater health, biodiversity and the increasing demand for proof of sustainable practices from both consumers and international trade partners. There was a strong sense that environmental responsibility was no longer optional – it is increasingly a requirement for market access and long-term success and we as farmers must be able to show proof of our actions.
The discussions also highlighted the innovation happening within the sector, with new technologies being rapidly developed to improve farming. Special mention was made of the significant improvements made by the agri-sector. Whilst the challenges in the primary sector are significant, so too are the opportunities – especially for those willing to adapt, invest in knowledge, and stay ahead of global trends. It was encouraging to see such energy and collaboration focused on the future of our sector.
Planning for next year’s PINZ event is already underway. It will be held in Auckland, 24-25 June 2026. The Golden Bay branch of Federated Farmers will again be offering to pay the registration fee for a couple of our members to attend.
