Nelson Federated Farmers
If you’re a farmer, grower, or landowner, chances are you’ve benefited from Federated Farmers — even if you’re not a member. Every year, we represent rural New Zealand at thousands of meetings, from the Beehive to local councils, constantly working to making sure the voice of practical, real-world farming is heard where decisions are being made.
It’s not glamorous, and it’s not always fast — some small changes take months and multiple meetings — but it matters. And more often than not, we’re the only ones in the room who actually live and work on the land. Many of the people writing rules about farming have never spent time on a working farm. Federated Farmers helps bridge that gap — using maps, photos, and simple explanations, and even inviting decision-makers to see the realities firsthand.
It’s easy to get frustrated — and while protests raise awareness, they don’t replace the official process. To be heard, concerns must be submitted in writing, with evidence, by the deadline. In 2021, when the Ute Tax hit, only Federated Farmers submitted formally. Others protested — we made the case where it counted. Run by farmers, for farmers, we know time is tight. That’s why, while you farm, we handle the paperwork and fight for practical workable rules.
But we can’t do it alone. To keep doing this work, we need your support. Being a member of Federated Farmers isn’t just about advocacy. It gives you access to: Industry-leading employment contracts, Health & safety systems tailored to farming, leasing and grazing agreements that save legal fees. Join as a supporting member or sign up your whole farm — Either way, you’re joining a community that’s been at the heart of farming for nearly 120 years.
But to keep that voice strong, we need your support. Back the team that’s been backing you all along. Give Top South Federated Farmers rep, Harry Matthews, a call and join Federated Farmers today.
