Peter Lucas says he has been “a geek before the term was even invented”, and he is happy that his knowledge helped serve the community at last month’s Motueka Repair Cafe.
The Motueka local says he has long held an interest in cyber security and operating systems, and it is this knowledge that he is bringing to the monthly repair cafes, offering to help customers update their computers to Linux.
After October, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, without payment of an annual fee, and will become increasingly less secure. On top of that, older computers cannot be updated to Windows 11, Peter says.
He reckons the Linux operating system revitalises computers with a modern, secure and frequently-updated operating system at zero cost.
At last month’s Repair Cafe, Peter helped seven customers, installing the new operating system on some devices, and advising others on how to prepare their computers for Linux installation this month. Only one device was deemed too old for the upgrade.
“If you can make them useful again, then why not?” he says.
Peter has created a Facebook group – search for Linux Learners Tasman. He will also be at this weekend’s repair cafe at Te Noninga Kumu-Motueka District Library, on Saturday, 16 August, from 10am-1pm.
