The Owen River Pig Hunt was in full swing this year, drawing 97 keen hunters - adults and juniors alike - for a weekend of wild game, community spirit, and classic rural hospitality.
Hosted by John and Kim Siu of the Owen River Tavern & Motels, the 2025 event marked the third consecutive year since the much-loved hunt was revived.
First hosted by the Sius in 1998, the competition ran for 15 years before taking a long break. But thanks to local encouragement and helping hands, it made a successful comeback in 2023.
This year’s change of date—from its usual early July slot—brought clear skies and one of the sunniest turnouts in years.
The Sius, who migrated from Hong Kong in 1987 and have run the Owen River Tavern for 26 years, say the event has always been about more than just hunting.
“We’re part of the furniture now,” laughs Kim. “We’re so grateful to the community for accepting and welcoming us and backing this event.”
The return of the pig hunt was inspired by a local regular who reminded them just how important the event was to the community.
“He offered to help with the organising—and that made all the difference,” Kim and John say.
Local support didn’t stop there. Nearby resident Heather Kinzett suggested fundraising to support comfort initiatives for elderly locals, adding another layer of care to the event’s impact. Meanwhile, hunters generously donated unwanted game meat through the Carcasses for a Cause programme, with the meat going to local churches and those in need.
“It’s great to see the meat go to a good cause,” Kim adds. Special thanks went to major sponsors Aryn Town AT Tree and Dean Kinzett Forestry, Kahurangi Angus Ltd, along with a long list of local businesses who helped bring the weekend together.
From big boars to big hearts, the 2025 Owen River Pig Hunt was less about the game and more about the people. As Kim puts it, “It’s about the stories, the laughter, and the way Owen River brings people together. I’m just lucky to be part of it.”
