The Tasman National Art Awards are back with record entries from across New Zealand, and the 2025 exhibition is shaping up to be the most impressive yet.
With 440 submissions received, the standard of work is exceptionally high. A blind selection process - where artist names are removed - ensures fairness and impartiality, with three independent selectors from around the country selecting 123 final works, from 102 artists, to be exhibited. From this, the finalists are judged, and winners are announced on opening night.
Committee chair and artist Anna Pickersgill-Brown says the variety and calibre of the work is what makes this event so special.
“It’s unbelievably exciting to be part of it. Artworks come from all over New Zealand, creating a really good mix of both national and local variety. There’s a wide range, from professionals to amateurs, and the calibre of work is amazing,” she says.
“The awards have been running for over fifteen years and were proudly founded right here in the Tasman region.”
This year’s $15,000 prize pool—made possible by generous sponsors—includes cash, products, and vouchers. All artworks are for sale, with many snapped up each year to adorn homes, offices, and public spaces.
Motueka-based artist Jennifer Stebbings is among those exhibiting. She first entered the awards in 2014, won the People’s Choice Award in 2023, and has submitted two oil paintings this year.
“The awards are national, attracting entries from all over New Zealand, so the standard is incredibly high – there’s some amazing art,” she says.
Jennifer encourages everyone, not just art enthusiasts, to visit the exhibition, noting that many of the works are simply enjoyable to look at.
“You don’t have to search for meaning in every piece.”
