The Motueka Camera Club was proud to host this year’s Seddon Shield Area Photography Convention, welcoming photographers from across the region to the stunning setting of Takaka in Golden Bay.
Now in its 51st year, the Seddon Shield sees six clubs (Marlborough, Nelson, Buller, Greymouth, Golden Bay, and Motueka) take turns as host.
Held from 29–31 August at the Golden Bay Recreation Centre, the venue provided excellent support, while the Wholemeal Cafe’s outstanding food kept 60 delegates well nourished.
The weekend of inspiration, learning, and camaraderie began Friday evening with registrations and reconnections, followed by three engaging presentations.
Speakers included Rachael Smith — multi-award-winning photographer, educator, Ilford Master, and president of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) — and Gerard Emery, managing director of CR Kennedy NZ and an NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer recognised with top industry honours.
Adding a strong local voice, Motueka photographer and gardener Grant Douglas inspired with his creative insight on Zen Photography.
Saturday’s perfect weather set the stage for four diverse field trips to Wharariki Beach, the historic Langford Store, Te Waikoropupū Springs, and The Grove Scenic Reserve – leaving delegates inspired and with a plethora of images.
Competition results were eagerly awaited, and Motueka Camera Club was thrilled to secure the Mathewson Trophy in the interclub competition.
Members Kim Falconer, Heather Knapp, Nicole Tai, Gaile Douglas, Grant Douglas, Bernard Enoka, and Bruce Reid also celebrated success, receiving Honours, Highly Commended, and Acceptances – recognition of the club’s depth of talent.
The event was made possible through the leadership of organising chair Craig Martin and his dedicated committee. Club President Mike Speak says he is proud to lead a group that delivered a first-class meeting under Craig’s expert guidance.

The Club meets the first Monday of each month at 7.30pm in Te Noninga Kumu-Motueka Library. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Whether experienced or just starting out, you’ll find a friendly, supportive space to learn, share, and be inspired.
