A serious crash has closed State Highway 6 north of Murchison and brought power lines down across the highway.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is advising anyone needing to travel between Nelson and Murchison to delay their journeys or expect significant delays following the closure on Monday afternoon.
The crash between Owen River and Longford, has closed the road meaning drivers travelling between Richmond and Murchison will need to travel to Blenheim first before taking SH1 to Waipara.
The detour would see drivers travelling via SH6 to Blenheim, SH1 to Waipara, SH7 to Springs Junction, SH65 to O’Sullivan’s Junction, and SH6 to Murchison - a "significant detour".
Those who do not need to travel are advised to delay their journeys until the road is re-opened.
NZTA will provide a further update at 5pm.
