Madagascar: A Musical Adventure Jr is an adventure-filled show brimming with self-discovery, heartwarming friendship, and crack-a-lackin’ comedy.
From the moment the opening number Showtime began, the audience was hooked. We were quickly swept away by Alex, Marty, Gloria, Melman, and the ever-scheming penguins as they escape the New York zoo and embark on an unexpected journey into the chaotic, colourful world of King Julien’s Madagascar. With infectious music and high-energy choreography—featuring hits like I Like to Move It—it was almost impossible to stay seated.
Katarina Salcin-Watts brought essential stage presence to Alex the Lion with impressive vocals and shared a lovely onstage connection with Evie McLean’s Marty. McLean radiated Marty the Zebra’s energy and charisma throughout the performance. Gloria the Hippo, played by Arizona Burt, was brimming with sass and charm, while Billy O’Connor brought Melman’s eccentric, loveable awkwardness to life with natural comedic timing.
Skipper the Penguin, portrayed by Oliver Genery, deserves recognition for nailing a dialogue-heavy role with confidence and humour. Lena Knox was a clear standout as King Julien—her performance was cheeky, authoritative, and hilarious, especially for the adult audience members.
The props were next-level, really helping to tell the story, and the set creators outdid themselves with inspired scenery that created an immersive, earthy atmosphere. While the penguin masks sometimes made it hard to see facial expressions, the creative costuming more than made up for it, maintaining a cohesive, jungle-inspired look.
Managing a youth cast of over 100 is no small feat. While a few transitions were a little rough, the inclusion of principal cameos was a brilliant way to give more young performers their moment to shine.
Directed by first-time Nelson Youth Theatre director Caren Shrubshall, this joyful, cheeky production is a feel-good show for all ages. With a short run, book quickly—tickets won’t last long!
