Update: 9pm: One person has been arrested without incident following a Police incident in Nelson today.
Police received a report of a person making threats inside a private address on Hardy Street East about 3:30pm today.
Officers, including the Armed Offenders Squad and Police Negotiation Team, were in attendance.
Cordons were set up and local residents were evacuated to a local school for a time, but cordons are now lifted and residents are able to return to their homes.
Charges are pending for the 36-year-old man, who is expected to appear in Nelson District Court on Friday 24 October.
Update 7.35pm: Police have evacuated residents in area around Hardy St East due to an ongoing incident.
Police received a report of a person making threats inside a private address on Hardy Street East about 3:30pm today.
Officers, including the Armed Offenders Squad and Police Negotiation Team, remain in attendance working to bring the matter to a safe conclusion.
There are some cordons in place around the area while this happens, and some residents have been asked to evacuate their homes as precaution.
These people, or those in the area who choose to, can go to an evacuation centre at Nelson Central School, 79 Nile Street, until the matter is resolved.
Earlier: Cordons are in place on Milton St after Police received a report of a person making threats inside a private address on Thursday afternoon.
A police spokesperson says they were called around 3.30pm today.
They say police are in attendance to work to bring this to a peaceful resolution.
A nearby resident told Nelson App that cordons are in place at Milton St and Tory St and that ambulances are also visible on the street.
Police say they are in place for public safety while police attend the scene.
