Having an international student stay with our family in Upper Moutere, whilst attending Motueka High School, has been a rewarding experience.
Opening our home to a young person from another country has given us the chance to share our Kiwi lifestyle – from fish and chips on the beach to hiking in our beautiful national parks – while also learning about another culture, language, and way of life.
The friendships we’ve formed have truly become lifelong connections. One of our past students was in our son’s bridal party, and our daughter recently returned from eight months of travelling with a previous student – they now describe each other as “sisters by chance, friends by choice.”
Moments like these show the depth of the relationships that can grow through hosting.
Of course, there are challenges at times – communication styles, homesickness, or navigating cultural differences – but these moments are opportunities for learning and empathy on both sides. With support from the Motueka High School international team, we’ve always felt guided and encouraged.
Hosting has enriched our lives, connected us globally, and reminded us of the value of kindness and shared experiences. We would recommend it to any family considering becoming a homestay – it truly is a life-changing experience.
