Nelson Tasman bursts with creativity from stunning visual artists and inspiring musicians to makers of mouth-watering treats.
Among them is writer and performer Alli Campbell, who uses words, wit, and a splash of nonsense to create laughter through pantomime.
Pantomime is a wonderfully quirky form of interactive theatre — full of tradition, laughter, and audience participation. It’s often thought of as a uniquely British art form, yet it continues to thrive around the world.
Designed for families to enjoy together, pantomime invites everyone to join the fun: booing the villain, shouting “He’s behind you!”, and chiming in with “Oh yes it is!” There’s usually a gloriously messy scene, a sprinkle of slapstick chaos, and even a sing-along finale.
Of course, it wouldn’t be panto without a few cross-dressing conventions — the Dame (played by a man) and the Principal Boy (played by a woman). Alli has reimagined these traditions for today’s audiences.

The result is pure fun: songs, dances, and big laughs suitable for everyone from age 3 to 103. And no, you don’t need to bring a child along — panto is for everyone.
Viking Ha! tells a tale missing from the famous Viking sagas. A tale of true friendship, self-discovery and standing up for each other. Meet the lesser known deities of Norse mythology, some virtuous viking and a dragon or two (no dragons will be trained in this production). Expect odd socks, bad puns and all the usual pantomime silliness.
The story behind Viking Ha! was inspired by Alli’s childhood growing up near the location of the viking Battle of Largs (1263), as well as her years as a historical reenactor. Though it wasn’t until she moved to New Zealand that she was inspired to write, “There’s just something so positive, so inspiring in New Zealand that makes you say, yes, I can do this thing.”
Alli has previously written and directed three original pantomimes, all staged at the Theatre Royal Nelson: Buzzz (2016), Sinbad the Sailor (Retired) (2020), and Go West (2023). Each one delighted critics and, more importantly, audiences.
The creative spirit of Nelson/Tasman continues to work its magic.
