Nelson’s Inclusive Sport Trust (IST) has received a grant of $8,190 from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), helping it continue to provide sport and recreation opportunities for people of all abilities.
IST co-chair Helen Bywater says the trust’s programmes are designed primarily for players with supported learning needs, but siblings and others are always welcome.
“It’s all about working with people’s abilities and improving their skills in a positive, inclusive environment. Without NZCT’s generous support, we wouldn’t be able to provide these opportunities for those often excluded from traditional sport and recreation.”
Based in the Nelson Tasman region, IST is the only inclusive sports trust in New Zealand with no entry criteria. Its mission is to promote participation and success in community sport, regardless of physical or intellectual ability or gender.
This year marks 20 years of inclusive basketball for IST, with several coaches, players and volunteers involved since the beginning. Many participants have grown with the programme – from junior players to mentors, referees and even trustees.
One parent says the programme has been transformative for their child.
“My son loves the variety of activities on offer, and it’s been really good for him to be able to mix with other people with similar abilities. The different activities mean there’s always a fresh, new challenge facing him every week.”
Sarah Kennedy, head of special education at Waimea College, says the Fulton Hogan Basketball League is a weekend highlight for students.
“They are trained and coached every Friday, learning new skills, improving fitness, and learning how to be a responsible team member,” she says.
“The experience of playing a mixture of teams – plus having a scoreboard, good referees and bench staff – is an incredibly valuable time for our whānau and caregivers to support their student while also catching up with other parents on the sidelines.”
NZCT general manager of grants, marketing and communications, Ben Hodges, says IST is doing vital work.
“The benefits and pleasure of sport should be available for everyone, regardless of ability.
“IST are doing fantastic work to ensure that’s the case. We are grateful to our responsible gaming partners in the region, Hotel Motueka and Ocean Lodge, for their help fundraising for this grant.”
