A care package filled with food treats is often the only Christmas gift many older people living alone will receive and Age Concern Nelson Tasman is seeking donations to fill more packages.
The organisation has launched its annual Christmas care package appeal and manager Caroline Budge says they usually hand out between 60 and 70 packages to older people each year.
“We have a list of our vulnerable clients who might not have much at Christmas or family around. They’re people we feel really deserve it and appreciate it.
“They love it and sometimes it’s the only Christmas present they get, and it puts a smile on their face. It can be really tough when you’re living by yourself and don’t have much disposable income. So, it’s a really nice thing to rock up to someone’s door and hand them a care package.”
The public can drop non-perishable foods – bought or homemade – into the Age Concern offices in Nelson, Richmond or Motueka.
