Now is the breeding season for our little blue penguins/kororā when they are in their burrows raising a new generation of chicks.
Typically the burrows are hidden in coastal dunes, under foliage or even under man-made structures.
Walkers out around local beaches and coastal tracks should mind their feet so as not to accidently trample a burrow.
It’s best practise to keep dogs under complete control at all times when walking local beaches and tracks - preferably on a leash – and be aware of new Dog Control Bylaw rules:
• Keep cats contained at night
• Drive carefully around local coastal roads
• Pick up litter, fishing tackle and hooks, and anything that might pose a risk to penguins... and other wildlife
Penguins should not be out and about during the day. If a penguin is observed in daylight hours it usually means it is in trouble.
