The Trewavas Street Art Walk started small – just four properties, seven artists and one determined resident who saw the creative potential along the street.
About 30 people turned up to that first event in 2016, pulled together by Joyce Griffin, and the idea stuck.
Now in its 10th year, the walk has grown to 21 properties and 40 artists, attracting about 400 visitors throughout the day.
Current organiser Abby McCall says the event has become a highlight for the community.
“It’s a wonderful way to celebrate local talent and give emerging artists a chance to share their work.”
A huge range of locally made items will be on offer, including pottery, paintings, prints, jewellery, clothing, carvings, garden sculptures and stained glass.
The walk also features a fundraising food stall, coffee cart and an ice cream trailer to keep visitors refreshed. Support from Motueka Arts Council and Tasman Creative Communities has helped keep stallholder fees low, making it easier for new artists to take part.
As part of the 10-year celebrations, Abby’s Motueka Creatives group will hold a weekend-long exhibition called Off the Edge at the Studio Beside the Sea Gallery, 83 Trewavas Street, on 29 and 30 November.
The Trewavas Street Art Walk is a free, rain-or-shine event. Stalls are open from 10am to 3pm. Maps and artist information are available from 11, 83 or 127 Trewavas Street.
