Working hand-in-hand with local police, the Nelson Community Patrol (NCP) has been a quiet but vital force in keeping our region safe for more than three decades. Established in 1994, the Nelson patrol was one of the very first in what has now grown into a nationwide network of volunteers dedicated to reducing crime and supporting safer communities.
Today, several patrols operate across Nelson Tasman, each made up of dedicated volunteers who give their time to help protect people and property. Leading the Nelson patrol is our December Local Legend, John, who has served with the team for more than 15 years. “To sum up, we are primarily an extra resource for local police,” he explains. “Our members go through necessary police-level training so that we can provide a reliable service.” By taking on a wide range of monitoring and support duties, the NCP helps police focus their resources on more vital areas where they are most needed.
That training is also a pathway as over the years many NCP volunteers have gone on to join the police force. “A lot of police recruits come through our patrol groups and gain valuable insight and skills in preparation for the police force,” John says.
The Nelson team currently includes 26 volunteers who can also be called out if police need additional support. Patrol duties vary widely, from driving through targeted suburbs to deter burglary and theft, to attending emergencies, supporting police at major events, and monitoring inner-city CCTV cameras from within the Nelson Police Station. Volunteers are often present during busy nights, events, and high-traffic periods.
“We are not here to ruin people’s fun,” John says. “We are here to protect people, both from themselves and others, and protect people’s property. That’s the bottom line. We want everyone to have a good time and then get home in one piece.” So next time you see them, make sure to give them a wave and say thanks for being local legends.
The Nelson Community Patrol welcomes those aged 25–55 who want to make a meaningful difference in our community. For information on how to apply, email nelson@cpnz.org.nz.
