Nelson’s planned marina expansion, which will help future-proof the waterfront, has been provided a $12.89 million government loan to help deliver infrastructure upgrades to drive economic growth and generate local jobs.
Regional Development Minister Shane Jones announced the funds from the Regional Infrastructure Fund in a visit to Nelson on Thursday.
“The Regional Infrastructure Fund loan will help make Nelson Marina a world-class marine services facility and a major contributor to the region’s economy,” he says.
The upgrade will provide the ability to lift out heavier boats for servicing by installing a 110-tonne vessel hoist. It will also expand the marina’s hardstand capacity for marine maintenance from 14 to 54 bays. A purpose-built marine service centre with office, retail and workshop spaces will also be built.
The funding recipient, Nelson Marina Management Ltd which is owned by Nelson City Council, will contribute $12.89 million in co-funding for the expansion project.
“It is anticipated this part of the project will create up to 110 jobs during construction and up to 180 ongoing roles once completed, while promoting local innovation within the marine sector,” Shane says.
Chair of Nelson Marina Management Limited Rick Herd says this investment will deliver long-term economic, social, and maritime benefits.
“This investment recognises the important role Nelson Marina plays in supporting our local economy, tourism sector, and marine industry.
“The new service centre will allow us to better meet demand, improve customer experience, and provide modern, fit-for-purpose facilities.
“By improving infrastructure at the Marina, we’re helping to future-proof Nelson’s waterfront and ensuring it continues to deliver value for locals, visitors, and marine operators alike,” he says.
It is estimated that Nelson’s sea-based blue economy adds more than $350 million a year in GDP to the region and employs more than 3700 people. It serves as a base for a number of industries including fishing and aquaculture, and is a popular tourism destination.

“Council has worked hand in hand with the Marina to secure this Government investment of almost $13 million, which will enable us to accelerate our ambitious development plans for Nelson’s Marina. It’s a great way to start 2026 and a real boost for the city’s economic recovery.
“It will enable construction of a new two-storey Marine Service Centre of about 10,000m2. It will also support the upgrade of the straddle lift from 50 tonne to 110 tonne and the expansion of the hardstand area from 3000m2 to 6000m2. The total investment in these projects is around $26 million and is expected to provide an additional 180 jobs.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, thanks to the funding allowing the design, feasibility assessment and resource consent process to start quickly.
Construction timeframes and further details will be confirmed as the project progresses.
