Nelson Tasman running festival The Spectacle has cemented its status as a major international event after receiving support from the Government’s Events Boost Fund.
The fund aims to lift international visitation and spark short‑term economic activity by helping grow and promote events around the country.
It is administered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
Established in 2024, The Spectacle brings together world‑class competition and community participation, with a clear ambition to become Aotearoa’s leading international running event.
Co‑founder Julian Matthews says attracting investment from the Events Boost Fund validates the festival’s success to date and its future potential.
“When we created The Spectacle, we knew it would have increasing tourism potential for New Zealand and our region year‑on‑year, as it becomes a notable event on the national and international running calendar,” Julian says. “Our commercial partners also support our global ambitions, and we are thrilled that the Government acknowledges the event's international potential by providing this funding.
“Building on the last two years we can now accelerate the opportunity to attract more participation from international runners, primarily from the United States and Australia, and their followers,” he says.
“The event is strategically scheduled in December to align with global holiday travel and training calendars, making it an attractive destination for global athletes.”
International marketing for the 2026 event will also showcase the region to lift awareness of Nelson Tasman as a top destination.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said this was one of many events receiving Government support in 2026.
“We are humbled by the incredible support for The Spectacle from the city, our partners and funders, the huge number of amazing volunteers, and of course the runners themselves. People have really embraced The Spectacle and we say a massive thank you to everyone who has been involved,” Julian says.
