A new sepak takraw court is taking shape at Victory Square, bringing one of Southeast Asia’s most fast-paced traditional sports to the heart of Nelson.
Often described as “kick volleyball,” sepak takraw is played using players’ feet, knees, chest and head to send a rattan-style ball over a high net.

The project has been championed by Nelson’s Karenni community – former refugees from Southeast Myanmar – working closely with Nelson City Council’s community partnerships team to bring the idea to life.
The court is being funded jointly by council and community fundraising. The total project cost is $160,000, with the council contributing $80,000 approved through the 2024–2027 Long Term Plan.
Construction began on 16 February and is expected to be completed by 6 March.
To celebrate the opening, a council versus community match is planned, with the date still to be confirmed.
