It’s only taken 22 years, but Jon Routhan is finally putting his journalism degree to good use. Having graduated from AUT University in 2002, Jon’s sporting interests had reporting firmly on the back burner, until a chance meeting with TSM Director Andrew Board at the Sport Tasman Sports Awards last year brought him back into the journalism fold.
Our new sports reporter joins the Top South Media team after nine years as director of sport at Nelson College for Girls. Prior to his time at NCG he was operations manager at Nelson Cricket, and in his spare time he is the owner/operator of Infinity Performance Coaching, a high performance sports coaching programme specialising in sports psychology and movement patterns.
Jon and wife Chelsea first started dating at Nayland college in 1998. 21 years of marriage and two children later, Nelson is still home, and his time coaching various sports in the region has given him a head start in his new reporting role.
“It’s pretty cool to be able to interview so many people across the massive sporting landscape throughout the region. We have incredible athletes on every street, and it’s a privilege to be able to tell their stories.”
Jon’s own sporting career has seen him travel across the world as part of the New Zealand indoor cricket team. Jon played for the team for six years and then moved onto the coaching team for a further five. He also played outdoor cricket for Nelson for eight years, and is trying his very best to ensure his love of New Zealand’s summer game doesn’t invade the sports pages too often.
