Meyah Greenhough has her sights firmly set on representing New Zealand after a remarkable medal haul at the Target Shooting New Zealand Outdoor National Championships.
The 18-year-old former Motueka High School student shot every day across the week-long event and emerged with three medals. Meyah won gold in junior women, silver for junior overall, and bronze in senior women. Her scores earned her selection in all six New Zealand teams she was eligible for, along with two Silver Fern pockets for representing New Zealand in the women’s and open teams.
Her achievements are even more impressive given it is only her second season competing in outdoor target shooting. Meyah has several seasons of indoor shooting behind her, but says outdoor events provide a far greater test.
“Outdoor competitions are far more physically taxing than indoor. Outdoor comps are 60-shot matches which can take about an hour, so it’s more tiring. Targets are twice as far away as well, and the weather plays a big part in outdoor shooting.”
That weather challenge was on full display during two days of the national championships, when Christchurch Pistol Club was hit hard by the recent bad weather sweeping the country.
“The weather was awful,” Meyah says. “It was as bad as I’ve shot in, but that made it more rewarding at the end to still do well.”
After her strong performance, Meyah is now looking ahead to 2027 with hopes of securing international opportunities.
“The Junior World Cup is in Germany next year, and I’d love the chance to shoot overseas. There is also the Oceania Games next year, so I’m definitely interested in that.”
